$120k/Month in 18 Months: High-Ticket Dropshipping for Van Lifers

Phil McEleney from Camper Nation

Can you build a six-figure e-commerce business selling products you don’t even use yourself? Let’s find out.

A year and a half ago, today’s guest was working a day job in digital marketing, feeling like he was always building somebody else’s business.

Sound familiar?

He decided to change that by launching an e-commerce store, and now he’s doing over $120,000 in monthly sales.

Phil McEleney from Camper Nation(opens in new tab) followed the traditional path of good grades, a good university, and a solid corporate job. But hitting 30 in a middle management role got him thinking about the next 30 or 40 years of his life, chained to an office and a commute.

That’s when he decided to build something of his own, one that could become a real, sellable asset.

He landed on camper van and motorhome accessories in the UK market, not because he’s a “van lifer” himself, but because the data pointed him there.

Within 18 months of dropshipping high-ticket products(opens in new tab), he took the business to $40,000 a month while still working his day job, and has since grown it well beyond that.

Tune in to Episode 758 of the Side Hustle Show to learn:

  • how to pick a high-ticket e-commerce niche using search volume and competitor data
  • how to get approved as an authorized reseller without any sales history
  • how a 3-tiered Google Shopping ad strategy targets buyers who are ready to purchase

Why Phil Chose High-Ticket E-Commerce

Phil wanted something he could run on evenings and weekends without quitting his job right away.

Working backward from the income he wanted, he realized he’d need to sell a huge volume of cheap products to make real money, or a smaller volume of expensive ones.

He decided to go after products retailing for $1,000 or more, where a single sale could net anywhere from $150 to a few thousand dollars in profit.

As he put it, “You’ve got to sell a lot of $10, $15 products to make the sort of money that’s going to ultimately replace your income.”

How to Find a High-Ticket Niche

Phil used a data-led process instead of chasing a personal hobby (He’s part of Dropship Breakthru(opens in new tab) and Jayden Clark’s 1% Ecom Club(opens in new tab))

  • Find a person, not a product – Someone passionate enough to buy multiple products from you over time.
  • Check search volume – In Ubersuggest(opens in new tab), add up the broad category terms — for saunas: “sauna,” “outdoor sauna,” “infrared sauna.” Target 20,000+ monthly searches combined.
  • Count direct online competitors in Google Shopping(opens in new tab) — other online-only sellers, not Amazon(opens in new tab) or big-box. He wants some (proof it works), but under roughly 20 in the US.
  • Specialised, not famous – Something a buyer would normally visit a specialist store for, from a brand with recognition. Not Sony TVs or Nike trainers.
  • Local suppliers only – domestic shipping in days, not containers in months.
  • Avoid DTC brands. They’re the ones who won’t let resellers bid on their branded terms.
  • Need 10+ potential suppliers, so a few rejections don’t sink it.
  • Tie-breaker: check price consistency among existing sellers. Wild variation means a race to the bottom.

Other niches he considered and passed on included wellness products like saunas and cold plunges (too competitive), man-cave items like pool tables and jukeboxes (too many DTC brands), and home gym equipment.

How to Get Approved as a Reseller

Once Phil settled on a niche, he built a basic website(opens in new tab) with a homepage, some content, and demo products before contacting suppliers.

Camper Nation Website

  • Most suppliers have a dealer or authorized retailer application on their site. Fill it in.
  • Where they don’t, call and ask for a sales manager.

He found suppliers surprisingly open to the arrangement since it’s mutually beneficial. As Phil explained, “You’re gonna be their best customer because… you will pay for every order before it ships.”

No credit terms, no risk to the supplier, and Phil handles everything on the sales side.

Out of roughly 20 suppliers he contacted, 4 said yes, which was enough to launch the site. He suggests looking for niches with at least 10+ potential suppliers so you’re not stuck if a few say no.

How the 3-Tiered Ad Strategy Works

Phil’s traffic starts entirely with Google Shopping ads(opens in new tab), which pull product images, names, and prices directly from the site with no creative work required.

He avoids Google’s automated Performance Max(opens in new tab) option in favor of manual campaign setup.

The setup uses three shopping campaigns representing: upper, medium, and bottom funnel intent.

Since shopping ads can only use negative keywords (not exact-match targeting), so:

  • Bottom- and medium-funnel terms are excluded from the upper campaign
  • Bottom-funnel terms are excluded from the medium campaign
  • High-intent searches get pushed down into the bottom campaign, where Phil bids hardest

Bids vary wildly by funnel stage. Generic top-of-funnel terms might cost 2 to 5 pence per click, while highly specific, ready-to-buy searches can cost up to £5 per click, typically landing somewhere between £1 and £3.

Gross margins on his products run 15% to 40%, with items closer to the $1,000 mark typically landing around 25-30%, which gives him room to profitably acquire that expensive traffic.

What Makes Customers Choose You Over a Competitor?

Since many suppliers don’t enforce minimum advertised pricing (MAP) in the UK, multiple sellers often list the same product at the same price.

Phil competes by building out his “offer” instead of price.

100-Day Returns

Camper Nation advertises a 100-day returns window, far beyond the industry standard, which he says drives more incremental sales than it costs in returns.

Phil said that out of 1,200 to 1,500 orders in 18 months, Camper Nation has had only around 12 returns.

A Phone Number, Answered

He also emphasizes getting customers on the phone.

Early on, he answered calls himself even without knowing every product spec, telling customers he’d check with his supplier and call back rather than guessing.

That responsiveness, plus having a real phone number on the site, built trust and drove sales.

How Organic SEO Took Over From Paid Ads

Paid traffic got Camper Nation off the ground, but Phil says organic search has become one of the biggest levers for growth.

He uses a method called Avalanche SEO, which groups sites into traffic tiers based on daily organic visitors:

  • Tier 0: 0-10 visitors
  • Tier 1: 10-20 visitors
  • Tier 2: 20-50 visitors
  • and so on…

The idea is that Google will only rank you for keywords matching your current tier, so a brand-new site has no shot at ranking for a broad, high-volume term like “sauna.”

Instead, Phil targets overlooked informational content:

  • buying guides
  • comparison posts
  • and specific questions people search around a product category.

He finds these using Answer the Public(opens in new tab), typing in a product category to surface real questions people are asking on Google(opens in new tab), YouTube(opens in new tab), and AI platforms(opens in new tab).

Building dozens of these lower-competition articles gradually builds a traffic base that lets the site compete for bigger terms over time.

Free Keyword Research You Can Do Tonight

Phil’s underrated favorite keyword research tool is Google itself:

  • Read the autocomplete predictions for your category
  • Prefix it with what, how, if, why and read those too
  • Work the alphabet — “sauna a,” “sauna b,” “sauna c”
  • Mine People Also Ask and People Also Search For

You get real search data, straight from the source. An hour can produce a month of content ideas. “That was my Friday nights at times.”

He wrote the early articles himself; now a Fiverr freelancer follows a detailed SOP — two AI tools layered, then a human pass for readability and accuracy — at a few dollars an article.

Tools/Tech

A Day In His Life

There’s a small team behind him now. First thing offloaded: customer service — the “where’s my order” work — to a VA.

Phil keeps the ads and the larger sales projects. Everything from the point of sale onwards is off his plate unless only he can make the call.

Mistakes to Avoid

Phil admits he underestimated how much people would trust an unknown website to spend serious money.

Looking back, he’d have gone even higher-ticket than he did, since the more pre-sale questions or complications a product has (installation, sizing, and so on), the more opportunity a seller has to add value and win the sale instead of just competing on price.

He also learned the hard way that logistics can fall apart fast.

Two days before a scheduled installation, Camper Nation’s national installation partner pulled out of every project, forcing Phil to scramble and find local installers to cover the job.

What’s Next for Phil?

Camper Nation started as a pure dropshipping operation but has since moved into holding stock on its best-selling SKUs, which improves margins and reduces reliance on supplier logistics.

Next, Phil wants to get some of his own branded products manufactured, aiming to release a proprietary product line sometime in the next year.

Phil’s #1 Tip for Side Hustle Nation

“Don’t let revenue cloud your judgment. Focus on profit.” As Phil added, “Revenue feeds the ego and profit feeds the family.”

Mediaprobe Review: Can You Really Get Paid to Watch TV?

Mediaprobe is an app that literally pays you to watch TV.

I’m not talking about watching ads for a penny a pop. I mean real shows and sports — the stuff you’d actually turn on anyway.

So I signed up. They mailed me a little sensor, and I spent a month testing it out to answer two questions:

  1. Would they really pay?
  2. Is it worth your time?

Short answer: yes, they really pay — I’ve earned $40 in gift cards so far — but there are a few drawbacks you should know about before you apply(opens in new tab).

Best for TV Lovers

Mediaprobe

4.1

Mediaprobe is a media research company that pays panelists to watch assigned TV shows, sports, and videos while wearing a small biometric sensor. Expect around $5 per hour of watch time, paid in gift cards.

Pros:
  • Get paid for something you were going to do anyway.
  • Fast payouts (next day, in my experience).
  • Hundreds of gift card options.
  • Genuinely low effort.
Cons:
  • Application only.
  • Limited watching options.
  • Gift cards only (no cash, PayPal, or Venmo.)
  • Requires microphone access and biometric data.

In this review, I’ll break down:

  • what Mediaprobe actually is
  • how the sensor and sessions work
  • how much I earned (and the realistic hourly rate)
  • the four drawbacks you should know about
  • some alternatives worth considering

mediaprobe review(opens in new tab)

What is Mediaprobe?

Mediaprobe — or MPanel, as it’s called in certain countries — is a media research company that pays you to watch TV.

You hold a small wireless sensor that measures your body’s reaction to what you’re watching. Specifically, it tracks your galvanic skin response(opens in new tab): tiny changes in your skin as you react to the content on screen.

It looks like this:

mediaprobe sensor

Companies and TV networks then pay Mediaprobe for that data(opens in new tab), because it tells them how audiences actually feel about their content — not just what people say on a survey(opens in new tab) afterward.

Some of their clients include:

  • CBS
  • Comcast
  • A&E
  • Lionsgate
  • and more

In exchange for our response data, Mediaprobe passes a portion of their income along to viewers like you and me.

It’s a similar idea to what User Interviews(opens in new tab) does for product feedback, except instead of talking to a researcher, your skin does the talking.

Who is Eligible for Mediaprobe?

Mediaprobe is open to adults 18 and over in the US, UK, and Portugal.

Multiple people from the same house can join(opens in new tab). That means you can essentially double-dip if you and your partner watch the same shows.

How Does Mediaprobe Work?

Step 1: Apply and Get Approved

This is where the first drawback comes in. Mediaprobe is application-only.

(If you’re ready to give it a try, click here to apply(opens in new tab).)

There’s a real cost to the company in shipping out the sensors, so they want to make sure their panelists fit the demographics and viewing habits their clients are looking for — and that you’ll actually participate once the hardware shows up.

In my case, I even had to hop on a five-minute call with their team to verify I was game to test this out.

mediaprobe onboarding call(opens in new tab)

But for the prospect of getting paid to watch videos(opens in new tab)? Sure, I’m willing to jump through a few hoops.

Step 2: Wait for Session Invitations

Once you’re approved, session invitations start landing in your inbox. Some of the ones I’ve been invited to:

  • Fear Factor
  • Top Chef
  • The Winter Olympics
  • Fox and Friends
  • A MrBeast YouTube video

Which brings us to drawback number two: you don’t get to pick.

You can’t just turn on the TV and expect to get paid. It has to be one of their assigned programs, at the assigned airtime.

I’ve been getting roughly 5-10 invites a month, but it still took a while to connect with one where I could commit to watching at the scheduled time.

Each invite tells you how long you’re supposed to watch and how much it pays. It’s typically $5 per hour of watch time.

mediaprobe session invite

The best I’ve seen was this 1-minute YouTube short that paid $2.50. That works out to $150 an hour … if you could stack those up consistently.

mediaprobe best hourly rate session

Step 3: Run the Session

You start the session in the Mediaprobe app, attach the little electrode readers to the tracker, and stick the sensor on your hand. They include straps to help hold it in place.

Then you leave it on for the duration of the show.

mediaprobe session start screen

Drawback number three: to verify you’re actually watching what you say you are, Mediaprobe asks you to enable your phone’s microphone so the app can hear the audio from the show and sync it with your reaction data.

Now this gave me a little bit of pause, so I reached out to Mediaprobe for clarification.

Per my contact:

Protecting our members’ privacy is one of our top priorities, so we use Audio Content Recognition (ACR) software(opens in new tab). Rather than recording all audio, the system creates a unique mathematical “audio fingerprint” from the sound it detects and compares it against a database containing only the content participants have been asked to watch. This allows us to confirm what content is being viewed without recording your conversations.

While the session is running, your screen shows thumbs up / thumbs down reaction buttons.

mediaprobe thumbs up thumbs down reaction screen

So on top of the biometric data the sensor is collecting, you can literally smash that like button when something lands.

For example, one of the sessions I did was a US World Cup match. When they scored, I gave it a healthy dose of “likes.”

Step 4: Submit and Get Paid

When the show ends, make sure to upload your sensor data. Depending on how long the show was, this can take several minutes.

mediaprobe sending session data

You’ll usually need to answer a few follow-up questions in a short survey. I’ve been asked about which ads I remember seeing, and what I liked or didn’t like about the show.

mediaprobe survey complete

Then you wait for the credit to hit.

When it does, you’ll get an email like this:

mediaprobe reward confirmation email

How Much Does Mediaprobe Pay?

Generally, Mediaprobe pays around $5 per hour of watch time, sometimes a little higher.

That’s not a bad rate if you were going to be watching anyway — but it’s never going to add up to a full-time income.

Here’s my actual earnings so far:

  • $10 for the MrBeast video
  • $15 for a World Cup game
  • $15 for another World Cup game

Total: $40.

For context, that’s a fraction of what you’d make with User Interviews(opens in new tab) ($50-150 an hour) or Respondent(opens in new tab) ($60+ an hour). But those require you to be actively working — answering questions, testing software, and possibly being on camera.

With Mediaprobe, I was on my couch watching soccer.

What are the Mediaprobe Cash Out Options?

I’ve gotten paid as soon as the next day, which is genuinely impressive compared to a lot of apps in this space.

But at press time, Mediaprobe only pays in gift cards.

To their credit, there are hundreds to choose from. (These are facilitated through Tango(opens in new tab), a leader in the space.)

I always end up picking Amazon, because I know I’ll use it eventually.

But if you were hoping for direct deposit, Venmo, or PayPal, you’re out of luck.

A Note on Privacy

Two things worth thinking through before you apply:

The microphone. The app listens to your ambient audio during sessions to confirm what you’re watching. That’s the verification mechanism, and it’s on for the duration of the session.

The biometric data. Galvanic skin response is physiological data about your body’s reactions. That’s the entire product Mediaprobe is selling to networks and advertisers.

Neither of these is hidden — it’s the whole premise of the platform. But it’s a different trade than “answer 20 survey questions for $2,” and it’s worth reading their privacy policy(opens in new tab) and deciding whether you’re comfortable with it.

For me, the sessions are time-boxed and I know exactly when the app is running, so I was fine with it. Your mileage may vary.

Is Mediaprobe Legit?

Yes, Mediaprobe is legit. I applied, they shipped me hardware, I completed sessions, and they paid me — quickly.

The company has been around since 2016, and has thousands of members.

One data point worth sharing on the customer service side: I had a session get denied because I didn’t complete the full watch time. It was a World Cup match where I was supposed to leave the postgame show on for at least 30 minutes, and I probably cut it off after 10 or 15.

A little warning in the app would’ve been nice — something like “hey, you’re about to quit your session early, are you sure?”

But after I politely emailed customer support, they ended up crediting me for the session anyway. That would’ve been well within their right to deny, since technically I didn’t follow the instructions.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Mediaprobe

Use an Old Phone

The app gets kind of unhappy when you leave the session screen for any reason.

So it makes sense to install Mediaprobe on an old phone or a device you’re no longer using — that way you can still text or scroll on your main phone while you’re watching.

Watch the Full Session

Learn from my World Cup mistake. The required watch time includes whatever they specify, postgame shows and all. Set a timer if you have to.

Respond to Invites Quickly

With only 5-10 invites a month, you don’t have a ton of shots on goal. And those are probably only worthwhile if they’re shows you were going to watch anyway.

Route those emails to your primary inbox so you actually see them.

Email Support if Something Goes Sideways

Their team was reasonable with me even when I was in the wrong. Worth a polite email before you write off a session as a loss.

Mediaprobe Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Truly passive-ish — You’re getting paid for something you were already doing.
  • Fast payment — As soon as next-day credit in my experience.
  • Free hardware — They ship you the sensor at no cost.
  • Hundreds of gift card options — Not just Amazon.
  • Responsive support — They credited a session I technically botched.
  • Low risk — Nothing to buy, no ongoing cost.

Cons

  • Application only — You can’t just sign up and start earning.
  • You don’t choose the content — It’s their assigned shows, at their assigned times.
  • Low hourly rate — Around $5/hour of watch time.
  • Limited invite volume — 5-10 a month, and you won’t qualify for all of them.
  • Gift cards only — No cash out to a bank account.
  • Microphone + biometric data required — Not a dealbreaker for everyone, but know what you’re signing up for.
  • No early-quit warning — Leave a session early and you may not get paid.

Mediaprobe Alternatives

If Mediaprobe isn’t a fit — or you’re waiting on your application — here are some higher-earning options in the paid research space.

User Interviews

User Interviews(opens in new tab) is a legit facilitator of online (and in-person) consumer research studies. Participants can get paid (generally $50-150/hr) to share their opinion and shape future products and services.

Other Survey and Research Options

If you like the “get paid for your opinion” model, here are more of Side Hustle Nation’s top picks:

Is Mediaprobe Worth It?

Mediaprobe really does pay, and getting a gift card for watching a World Cup match I’d have watched regardless feels like free money. The hardware works, the payouts are fast, and the support team was fair with me when I messed up a session.

But $5 an hour is $5 an hour. If you’re going out of your way to watch Fox and Friends at 6am because there’s ten bucks in it, you’ve invented a very poorly-paid job.

The best advice I can give: use Mediaprobe for content you were going to watch anyway. That’s the sweet spot. Anything beyond that, and your time is much better spent on a side hustle with higher earning potential.

There’s not a lot of risk or cost in applying, so if you’re a regular TV watcher, it’s worth a shot.

Apply for Mediaprobe here(opens in new tab) — and stack it with a few of the higher-paying research options above if you want this category to actually move the needle.
